Watching BBC2 program “the Chinese are coming”

Watching the BBC Two program “the Chinese are coming“ set my blood boiling. The presenter Justin Rowlett used his biased and bigoted view portraying China and its people as vicious money chasers with low moral standard and the evil power behind every problems faced by the world. While victimising all trade partners of China as being exploited, he also tried to paint the British with a golden brush.

Every educated person in the modern world should be able to see the rise of China is the hope of humanity rather than a threat.

First of all, with it’s huge populations, China is not asking any other country for aid. It’s providing its people with food, shelter, education, jobs, and most importantly, opportunities for the future. No one wants to see a weak China join the dole queue begging the world for small changes, especially the Chinese. So the credit certainly goes to the Chinese government which is doing the whole world a huge favour for not being a burden.

Secondly, China treats all its trading partners as equal. It was even mentioned in the program that the British did not show much sensitivity to the African and American people when they robbed at gun point not too long ago. Not mention the people they have slaughtered for trying to protect themselves. When they came to China 2 centuries ago selling opium, nobody saw any moral consideration from the British side. The only thing they were after were the gold and silver. When China finally stuck up a finger to them, they simply invaded the royal palace and forced the royal family to flee, and looted millions of valuables in the process. The ruined palace which was torched by the British is still in Beijing to prove this history.

In the first episode, the Angolans interviewed by Justin Rowlett even accuse the Chinese chicken farmer for getting up too early in the morning for the market. How ridiculous! According to them, hard working is a crime against lazy people. If you don’t have anything shocking to say about Chinese people, then shut up and stop insulting the intelligence of TV audience.

Justin Rowlett tried to take every chance to prove the inferiority of Chinese products. It took the form of contest on taste of chicken and bikini trying-on. None of the cases were convincing enough and he failed both miserably. Yes, Chinese good may be cheaper and not as well made, but it provides the world’s consumers with an extra option. Just like well-off people shop at Harrods, Selfridges or John Lewis, and others dress themselves with Asda clothes. No one expect the quality of product by George can compete with that of Gucci. Item would only worth the money that someone is willing to pay. So live and let live.

Finally the real threat that guaranteed to scare the Jesus out of you – China is building aircraft carrier! We are all gonna die in the third world war with the Chinese! Armageddon – no, sounds more like a Hollywood blockbuster. The only truth in this scaremonger is the political distraction. The west had aircraft carriers, nuclear and other aggressive weapons for nearly a century. Why are they so easily scared of China having the first one?  Grow up.

Although Mr Rowlett can fumble a few words in Mandarin, no Chinese would take him as a friendly face. He would feel more at home joining the few protesters outside the Confucius school in LA who’re hallucinating about stopping the new world order from coming. His commentary only serve his political masters’ ill purpose plus a bunch of poorly informed people who still lives in their imperial illusions.
